Based on functionality:

Step-up transformer: It converts the low voltage (LV) and high current from the main part of the transformer to the high voltage (HV) and low current value on the secondary end of the machine.

Step down transformer: It converts the high voltage and low current from the primary end of the transformer to the low voltage and high current value on the secondary side of the transformer.

Based on construction:

Three-phase: Three-phase transformers are mainly used in three-phase power systems. They are affordable compared to single-phase transformers.

Single-phase: Although the three-phase transformers are cost-effective, the size is a factor. Due to the size, experts suggest using three single-phase transformers instead of one three-phase transformer.

Along with electrical power transformers, there are two other types of transformers. They are distribution transformer and instrument transformer. The other types of transformers are two winding transformers, auto-transformer, and so on. For outdoor installations, there are outdoor transformers. On the other hand, there are indoor transformers for indoor machines.
